Protecting Your Driver's License

You should never ignore a traffic ticket. If you do not properly handle a traffic ticket, a warrant may be issued for your arrest and possibly recorded in the National Crime Information System (NCIS). The warrant can be executed by any law enforcement agency in any state. A simple bench warrant for ignoring a traffic ticket can prevent you from renewing your driver's license in any state.

If you have been issued a traffic ticket in northern Colorado, we offer a Free Initial Consultation to discuss the ticket and its consequences.

Consequences of a Traffic Ticket

In Colorado, a conviction for any traffic violation will assess points on your driver's license. Your driver's license will be suspended if you accumulate 12 points in one year or 18 points in two years. If you are between ages 18 and 21, your driver's license will be suspended if you accumulate nine points in one year or 12 points in two years. Some examples of Traffic Offenses and the number of points assessed to your driver's license are as follows:

Traffic Ticket Number of Points
SpeedingTwo to six points
Careless drivingFour points
Reckless drivingEight points
DWAIEight points
DUI and DUI Per Se12 points
Exhibition of speed (drag racing)12 points
Leaving scene of an accident that resulted in personal injury or property damage12 points

Out-of-state drivers: If you received a traffic ticket while driving through Colorado, there are ways to avoid returning to Colorado to take care of the ticket. As your lawyer, in some cases we can negotiate with the prosecutor to resolve the ticket without you having to appear in court.
